No Woman Behind is a dance and theatre project, which empowers young women from vulnerable backgrounds living in Addis Ababa. Meseret Yirga and Jessie Brett have been training girls living on the street, orphans, disabled women and partially sighted women. The training uses dance and theatre to improve the girls’ life skills such as confidence, communication, expressing themselves, focus, discipline, team work and acts as a kind of therapy to help them deal with the difficulties they face in their life and helps them to have a positive future.
No Woman Behind trains young women to become the next generation of dancers and choreographers in Ethiopia. Dance is a very powerful tool which can change people’s lives and also allows women to tell their stories and change perspectives of the audience and society.
We believe it is important to train the next generation and empower young women to continue this work in the future. This is why we have started No Woman Behind to train 12 women from very disadvantaged backgrounds, including some who are visually impaired. This is the first stage and we need to find support to continue working with these young women.
